Catherine - BEFORE

Where Does The Fat Go?
Come on this journey with me and find out  how I went from size 22 Women’s to size 6 Petite!

Before...
My name is Cathy. I was a forty nine year old woman who weighed over 200 lbs and was considered to be morbidly obese. Isn’t that a term? No sugar coating there.

Weight wasn’t an issue when I was young. My mother likes to tell the story of how I wore a size 6X until I was twelve years old! As a matter of fact, I had a rather good figure up until I was about twenty-one years old. Who knows what happened to change everything... Catherine-AFTER

After... On my 50th birthday I was in Maui and weighed 121 lbs. It was just 12 days short of my one year anniversary since having gastric bypass surgery.

All during the process, I have been asked numerous times, “If I had it to do all over again, would I have had the surgery?“ Well, as with any process, my answer changed along the way...

CHAPTER 3 ~ Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass vs. Lap Band

Don’t let anyone tell you differently – these are major surgeries, not a “procedure” and certainly not the “easy way out.”  Believe me, I’ve heard them all.

“The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is a surgical method of reconnecting the stomach and upper intestines in roughly a Y shape.  It is considered by many to be the current gold standard for weight loss procedure in the United States.  In this procedure, stapling creates a small (15 to 20cc) stomach pouch.  The remainder of the stomach is not removed but is completely stapled shut and divided from the lower stomach pouch.”

“Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding is a purely restrictive surgical procedure in which a band is placed around the uppermost part of the stomach.  The band divides the stomach into two portions.” *

CHAPTER 16 ~ The Great Burrito Fiasco (weeks after the surgery)

I know you are going to find this incredulous, given all that I've been through, but sometimes the stomach wins over the rational mind.  I was at work one day and I had a craving for a burrito. So, I got in my car and drove to the local fast food restaurant and ordered a burrito.  Well, three bites later, I'm in the rest room puking my guts out.  Needless to say, my pouch was wiser than I was!

A thought ran through my head that I remembered the dietician saying, “If it’s not on the list, don’t eat it.”

Words to live by and I wish I had heeded.

CHAPTER 17 ~ The Magical, Mysterious 90 Days

I'm writing this chapter on the 90th day after my surgery.  If you have gone through this surgery, everyone keeps telling you to, “Hang in there, things will get better. You just have to make it through the first ninety days.”  Even they don't know why this is so.

Now that it's here, believe me, I'm relieved.  I sometimes thought I wouldn't live to this point.  I do feel a lot better - i.e.  I'm eating a little more and I have more stamina.  I'm not depressed; I'm taking my vitamins, etc.  I am down to 163 pounds - 50 pounds since the surgery.  Size 22 to 18.

I guess I thought there would be more fan-fare or Karma, dogma, or even rapture, but no, it's Thursday June 28th and the heavens didn't open and angels didn't sing.  Oh well, I guess they are saving the fireworks for the 4th of July.

About the Author:

When I was in Boston in December (go figure) I was in bed reading when a movie came on the television.  It was called “Dream Girls.”I watched it and read at the same time until I heard this incredible voice that still gives me goose bumps when I think of it.

Anyway, when Jennifer sang the song, I Am Changing I immediately felt that this is my theme song.  When I got home to Phoenix I purchased the soundtrack. Every time I hear her sing, it inspires me.  My favorite lines are: I am changing, Yes I know how, I'm gonna start again, I'm gonna leave my past behind, I'll change my life, I'll make a vow and nothings gonna stop me now!

Someone asked what a typical meal was before my bypass and what is a typical meal now...
A typical meal before surgery was most of a pizza with either cookies or ice cream for dessert!
After surgery... 3 oz. boneless, skinless chicken breast cooked in olive oil and stir fry vegetables.

Catherine M. Colbert currently resides in Phoenix, Arizona.  If have any questions or tales of your gastric bypass surgery drop her an email, she'd love to hear from you.

Downsize Your Parents!

Tips for moving your parents
from a 2400 sq.ft. home into an 800 sq.ft.home

By Catherine McNulty Colbert

How do you fit
2400 into 800?

Cathy was faced with the biggest math problem of her life… and the daunting task of moving her elderly parents from their large four bedroom family home into a small mobile home.

The task involved going through items collected through the years and identifying what to keep and what to give away. With light hearted humor, Cathy shares some of the avenues she used as she downsized her parents, many of which you may find useful if you’re ever in the same situation.
