Robert Gillett enlisted in the Navy in October 1942 at age 18. He was stationed on New Caledonia and Guadalcanal, participated in the landing on Vella Lavella, and later transferred to Bouganville. He took leave, and was assigned to a Sea Plane Tender (AVP) on duty in the Philippine Islands. The AVP was Overhauled in Bremerton Shipyard, participated in maneuvers at San Diego, and then was assigned to Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone. Gillett was discharged in January 1946.
After graduating from University, he was recalled in September 1950 for the Korean Police Action. He served at the Naval Air Facility, Oppama, Japan until June 1950. After release from the Navy, Gillett continued to work as a Dept of Army Civilian in Japan, Okinawa, and Korea for 36 years. He retired in 1988, and is currently residing in the U.S. with his wife Julie Anna.
