"Miss Flavia™ was inspired by my imaginative daughter "Inky".  One night, while suffering from a mild cold, she asked me to tell her a story about gingerbread men. I told her the only one I could think of was the gingerbread cookie in "Shrek", but he didn’t play a very substantial role.

Within thirty minutes Miss Flavia came to life... The following night, she wanted to hear the same story. I told it as I remembered it, but of course when it's nine o’clock at night the details sometimes become smudged. "Inky" filled in the gaps in the story, fell asleep, and yet again asked to hear the story the following night. This time I was prepared. After the second request, I sat in front of my computer and wrote the story with vivid details and a much more creative plot.

I kept the story available in case I needed to refer to it for another bedtime reading.   A short while later, I mentioned the tale to my best friend (she is a successful first grade teacher… and I value her opinion above many people). I gave her a quick synopsis of the anecdote. With much encouragement from her and my wonderful husband, I decided to pursue publishing it.   I contacted a close friend (Starla Cologne) and we began producing Miss Flavia and the Cookie Cottage." —Kristina

Miss Flavia
and the Perfect Wedding Cake

The Author:
Kristina Schmidt

Kristina Edelkamp Schmidt began writing short stories as a young child. Always interested in narratives and fiction, she continued exploring everyday life looking for the inspiration for a great children’s story.

In early 2009, her dramatic five year old daughter, with a very mild cold, begged for an original bedtime story. Not interested in one of the myriads of books displayed on her shelf, “Inky” decided that an unusual story about gingerbread men would be the only thing that could help her feel better. After decades of searching for the proper muse to stimulate a story book series, her daughter’s dramatic outlook was the beginning of Miss Flavia.

Kristina currently lives in Tampa, Florida with her husband and daughter. She is expecting her second child.

The Illustrator:

Starla Cologne’s love of sketching and “doodling” began during the early years of primary school. Her homework and exams would be bordered with abstract creations, thus propelling her into beginning professional classes during middle school and high school.

The desire to create flowed into college, at International Academy of Design and Technology, where she excelled at her major in Computer Animation.

Currently, Starla resides in Tampa, Florida with her daughter and is looking forward to sketching the upcoming books for Miss Flavia Productions.
