About the Author:
Sonny was born Marvin but when he was a little boy his uncle endearingly called him "Sonny" and it stuck. His mother, the most influential person in his life. She was a high school graduate and had a great love for books; she instilled Sonny with the love of learning. Sonny remembers times were so tough that his mother would have to save up to accumulate the 25 cents needed to buy another volume of their enclyclopedia. With the help of his mentor, Uncle Lou, he later become an artist.
Sonny graduated De Witt Clinton High School in The Bronx. He enlisted and was stationed in the Philippines and Korea. He served in the Air Force. He was in the infantry, and flew Gunner B-24's. He was sent to the Philippines and was with the 40th Infantry Division, 160th Regiment, Company A. When the atom bomb was dropped he was on a LST (tank landing ship) for the invasion of Japan.
When he returned to the US he married, raised three children, and lived in Westchester County, New York. For many years he owned M.S. Newman Plumbing and Heating a wholesale supply company in The Bronx.
Sonny made the permanent move to Florida in 1998 after years of being a snowbird. He has strong political views and is proud of being an activist. He was influential in having a Nazi deported and handcuffed himself to the United Nations building to help free Russian Jews. He is now active in the arts with his poetry, calligraphy, cartooning, comedy, acting, and 'teaching' religion and history trivia.
Sonny was schooled in drama at the Dramatic Workshop and Weist Barren School of Commercials. He has done voiceovers with Michael School of Voiceovers. He is a professional extra for films. SO, I CAN BRAG CAN'T I ???? |
|
MY NEW HOBBY |
|
MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL… |
My book is being published
This I can't perceive
My cup runneth over.
Who ever would believe???
Who would want to buy it?
Poetry is not a person's 'thing'.
But just to see my name on it
To say I had my 'fling'...
It gives me some immortality
At least that's the way I feel.
'Sonny Newman passed this way'
He was somebody who was real...
It's a 'picture' of my inner thoughts
Of life now as I view it.
Written in poetry and cartoons
That's the way I do it...
You may not concur with some of it
Not all of it is serious.
Much comedy is portrayed
But don't expect to be delirious...
All of the above has it's roots
In my Mother's love of reading.
Books were all over the house
She had to do no pleading...
And then there was my Uncle Lou
Calligraphing and drawing.
He was my 'envied person'
Hence came pen and pencil exploring...
If it becomes number one
And on the Times they don't diss it.
I'll give you all my autograph.
It's for sale, please don't miss it... |

I am starting a new life
Today at 72 years old.
I’ve decided to visit doctors
As a hypochondriac I am told.
I need to fill in two or three days
When I have nothing to do.
And that will complete my new life
As I add it into my ‘stew’…
Yes, I have my comedy club
And then there’s my poetry class.
Also lecturing on unusual history
Helps the good times to pass…
I also do drawings
And cartoons are my forte’s.
I’ve been in some commercials,
A few movies and some plays…
But what about Thursdays and Fridays
What do I do for fun?
So, I am going to go to doctors
To complete my weekly run…
I now will able me to fill the week
And do something with my time.
So, I wrote this little ditty
And put it into rhyme…
Thanks for listening to my story
As I consider my life sublime.
And understand little ole me
As I add it to Father Time…
|
|
When I wake up in the morning
And my eyes are irritating me,
I rinse them out with water
In order to clearly see…
It’s then I pass the mirror
As I dry my sleepy eyes,
I see a person I don’t know.
It’s quite a realistic surprise….
I have a picture in my mind
Of what I wish to see.
But who the hell is this person
Right in front of me???
I slowly regain my composure
And take a look again,
Is this the Sonny Newman
I know from way back when???
The skin is kind of wrinkled,
The hair is getting thin,
Bags are showing ‘neath' the eyes
There is no way I can win…
I think I’ll ask the mirror
“Am I the fairest of them all”
What a stupid question
To ask a mirror on the wall…
OK, “Mirror, mirror on the wall
Am I the fairest of them all?”
“Stop your conceit and stop your frets,
It’s what you see, is what you gets”…
So, I’ve learned that I will see myself
Only as to what I want to see,
And to all those mirrors on the wall,
They no longer bother me… |

A portion of an article in the Winter 2007 Humana Active Outlook© Magazine
Laughter Really is the Best Medicine
Humana member Sonny N. of Sunny Isles, Florida, was hospitalized a few years ago for telling a joke. He was suffering with back pain when he called his doctor's office to get some medication. When the nurse said he couldn't help him, Sonny threatened to jump - an inlikely outcome, since he lives in a first floor apartment. Nevertheless, the nurse dispatched the police to his home and he was escorted to the hospital for an evaluation. "Apparently, it's the law" says Sonny about the event. That he can laugh about this and make others laugh with him is his gift.
A prolific comedian, poet, artist, and historian extraordinaire, Sonny facilitates regular classes on humor or seniors in his community. Using his unique comedic style and his love of history, Sonny helps others overcome depression, grief, and tragedy in the same way humor has helped him.
Along the way, Sonny has come to understand what international stress management and humor consultant Loretta LaRoche has known for several decades - that laughter can be very therapeutic. "In fact, if you're feeling run down, you might consider laughing more," says LaRoche, whose special brand of optimistic psychology has had a positive effect on the health of all those exposed to her.
Sonny joined a class on humor in 2001 after the murder of his musician son Neal. "I was lost and a friend said to me 'you have a great loss and you can take these grieving classes, but I know of a class where people go when they are grieving and they tell jokes,'" says Sonny. "I went there and I started to tell my jokes and I became the best in the class. About a year later when the facilitator left, I took over."
A self-proclaimed activist, Sonny has also published a book, And I also do Windows, and he often acts and performs. He loves playing extras in movies and has a long list of films to his credit. "I'm now doing what I should have been doing all of my life," says Sonny.
The winner of the 2005 Volunteer of the Year Award in Miami-Dade County, Sonny worked in the plumbing industry for most of his adult life.
"Laughter really is the greatest way to relieve grief," says Sonny.

No stranger to heartache, Sonny's laughter and humor have been good medicine for him and the budding comedians he leads |
