BOOK OF BEGINNINGS
by David A. Stuckey |
Early Book Reviews Are Overwhelming! |
"It's really really good, David. I'm very jealous, esp. considering how pleased my mother would be if I did something like that... I loved it, and I'm going to read it again! Very nicely done... Since that was only the first 20 or so years, you need to have a companion volume for the next 20 or so years - it's Proust all over again!" — Karen Simpkins |
"... damn dude, you're a great writer... Your writing is so compelling, so eloquent and yet so attainable... Keep writing, I want to read more! :) " — Michelle Parker |
"I read half your book last night (bastard - you kept me up until 2:30 am). I'm really enjoying it... I can actually hear your voice telling the stories and the sarcasm makes sense to me. The chapter, 'My Father Kills My Mother' had me laughing out loud for quite a while. I love the vision of you just completely resigned to the fact that is what had happened. Anyway, good work man." — Matt Eisenbrandt |
"Wow! Fabulous Book!!!" — Miriam Hiser |
"Got your book, couldn't put it down last night. It's soooo tempting to skip ahead to stuff I know, I'm going to know about. I ordered a couple... Your TV routine as a kid was the exact same as mine... I'm loving your book... I laugh out loud repeatedly while reading it. Great work Dave. I find myself really proud of you." — Doug Karsch |
"I got your book yesterday and decided I was going to skip my run today and stay home and read it. Well, it's 1:00 AM and I'm finished... Wow!... So many times I laughed out loud for a long time... If I was having a pizza delivered I think the guy would have thought I was crazy... The chapter to/about your mom ("Ma Mare") made me cry. It was beautiful!... Michelle - all I'm going to say... she is going to make the future mother of Rachel very jealous! She seems like a goddess that every woman aspires to be. She is even making me jealous! :) For someone who isn't one to jump on couches from happiness, you should be. It seems you have great parents, that love you and have been there for you. You seem to have REAL friends. You are smart and funny and charismatic. And you have beautiful eyes, too! You rock!" — Tatyana Carroll |

David's Family Members are Equally Impressed |
"David, I loved your book.... I read it in two sittings, the second of which was the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep, and I was laughing out loud and trying very hard not to wake Tim up. There were three stories that made me literally laugh out loud. One was when you tripped over the curb or the concrete block or whatever it was. Another was when you leaned across the counter to flirt with the clerk and drooled blood (that one still makes me laugh). And a third one which also still makes me laugh was the one of the woman coming out of her house yelling at you "Urinate! Urinate!" But I loved it all. For me being allowed that picture of your family was really wonderful." — Aunt Tamara Dutton |
"I love it, love it, love it... Such a good book. Such a brilliant writer!
It's pretty fantastic, actually. In all truth it made me laugh so hard that I couldn't read some of the time, and then cry a little bit. And it wiped out the afternoon that I got it... because I couldn't stop reading. You'll like it." — David's mother, author Marsha Dutton

"... the book came, and I am reading. Trying not to finish too quickly. Even just a few pages in, my eyes were red from the same mix of laughing and caring that your mom reported.
You sure make us out to be *the* family of the 70s, and you are sure a lot nicer to your parents than it seems to me we deserve. And did we ever turn the darned TV off? How did we ever find time to read?
You are a terrific writer. And an amazing rememberer, too. People will also be amazed at all you've done and retained and learned from. Wise and incredibly funny and self-effacing.
What strikes me about your memory, David, is that unlike most of us, you have retained not only a vivid recall of embarrassing and awkward moments but a sense of what they meant and mean.
I just read your Bowl story. I don't think I'd ever heard it before, and what a terrific ending to an amazing book. I can hardly believe what a wonderful work it is." — David's father, John Stuckey |
