James L. Sullivan, Ph.D.

Gypsy on a Jet...

Senior citizen Jim Sullivan, aka “The Wanderer,” spent three years traveling and working throughout Africa (from January 2001 to February 2004), where he visited 22 countries while existing on an extremely limited budget. His mode of travel consisted of whatever was available (broken-down buses, ships that should have been junked years prior, backs of motor-bikes, and just plain backpacking).

A man of wit and perception, he brings to life the people of Africa, the wide gaps between poverty and wealth, and gives vivid descriptions of cities, jungles and wild animals he viewed on his great adventure.

Sullivan is a retired U.S. Army major, who specialized in Latin America while in the military. Prior to going to Africa he had visited the other six continents and plans to return to the Dark Continent as soon as he finds an acceptable area to volunteer.

Jim is currently living in Viet Nam where he has adopted an orphanage and is working on his 3rd book.

The first donation went to the volunteers at An Binh Hospital in Vietnam. Jim traveled with hospital volunteers to bring food and medicine to extremely poor areas in the countryside.

James L. Sullivan, Ph.D.

I had been planning for some time, actually while traveling in India, to visit Africa, my last and the seventh continent. Initially, I thought I could continue my first trip which began in 1997 in India and keep going until I had completed all the areas I was interested in seeing. As it turned out, my longest trip lasted only four months, so that I spent over three years covering Asia, SE Asia, and parts of Europe. However, by the time my wife Diane and I returned from Vietnam in November of 2000, my wheels were turning vigorously in planning this next adventure.

We can use many names here: vagabond, tramp, bum, traveler, wanderer, etc., all translatable in practical every day language. For some cultures, which are basically nomadic, there would be a wider vocabulary as is the case for snow and ice in the Eskimo language. There are some who are addicted to this disease (as some would consider it), who of course are quite well known, i.e., Steinbeck, Hemingway, Jack London, Sterling Haydon to name a few. Of course, others became heroes because of their contributions related to their ventures: Mar Da Columbus, Cortez, Pizarro, and let’s not forget Father Serra, who was the priest responsible for the founding of the majority of Catholic missions along the California coast.

If one does not have this lure, there is no way he can understand the reason for those of us who do and the need to see the other side of the mountain." ~ Jim Sullivan
